— Editorial art direction, engaged design, design as public discourse

Tibor Kalman

The bridge between militant postmodernism and editorial maximalism

Founder of M&Co in 1979, Kalman made design a form of public discourse. Art director of Artforum then Interview, he founded and edited Colors (Benetton, 1991–1995), a manifesto-magazine on diversity.

Mentor to Stefan Sagmeister and a tutelary figure of New York design, he sits at the hinge between militant postmodernism (Family 2) and editorial maximalism. AIGA Medal in 1999, posthumously. Monograph: Perverse Optimist (1998).
